Chapter 3 — Department of Artificial Resources

Communication and Information

When it comes to communication and information exchange, there are significant differences between humans and AI Agents.

And these differences have profound implications for organizations.

For humans, communication has a cost.

It takes time to transmit a message, whether in person, by email, or by phone.

And each communication usually involves only a few people at a time.

AI Agents, meanwhile, can communicate all with all, instantly.

It’s almost like a “hive mind”, if you’ve watched Apple’s Pluribus series.

All agents can be constantly exchanging information and updating their knowledge in real time.

This brings a great advantage in terms of speed and efficiency in information dissemination.

However, there are also disadvantages compared to humans.

For example, AI Agents are not present at the company “coffee break.”

They don’t participate in informal conversations where valuable insights and information often emerge.

Here, there’s an entire work to be done to ensure that AI Agents have access to this type of tacit knowledge.

And that’s one of the topics we’ll explore in much more detail in the section about Knowledge Management.

Because that’s an area where the introduction of AI Agents will bring profound changes in all organizations.

But for now, let’s outline some other key characteristics of AI Agents in relation to communication and information:

  1. Access to knowledge bases: AI Agents can access and process large amounts of information from internal and external databases much faster and more comprehensively than humans.
  2. Precision and consistency: Communication between AI Agents is much more precise and consistent, free from the noise and misunderstandings that often occur in human communication.
  3. Potential for overload: At the same time, AI Agents’ ability to handle large volumes of information can lead to overload if not well managed.
  4. Information security: With AI Agents accessing and exchanging large amounts of data, information security becomes even more critical.
  5. Explainability and transparency: It can be difficult to understand the reasoning behind AI Agents’ communications and decisions, which requires work to make these processes more explainable and transparent.
